Description

Scotch Pie is a traditional Scottish dish made with a flaky pastry shell filled with minced meat, typically lamb or beef, and seasoned with spices.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup butter, chilled
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1 lb minced meat (lamb or beef)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix the flour and butter until crumbly, then add cold water to form a dough.
  3. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  4. In a skillet, sauté the onion until translucent, then add the minced meat and spices, cooking until browned.
  5. Roll out the dough and cut into circles to form the pie bases and lids.
  6. Fill the bases with the meat mixture and cover with the lids, sealing the edges.
  7. Brush the tops with beaten egg.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add herbs like thyme or rosemary to the meat mixture.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes or peas for a traditional meal.
  • These pies can be made in advance and frozen before baking.
